Construction types are very important at the time a building is being constructed. Structural engineers and architects must be thoroughly familiar with them to determine the construction systems and materials that can be used throughout a building—both exterior and interior.
There are several considerations that go into choosing a structural system and a construction type, including building size and height, intended occupancy classification, affordability, and sustainability.
Construction types become a consideration on interior projects as well. When working on an interior project that requires the reconfiguring of building elements, such as relocating walls, making changes to floor or ceiling conditions, or adding a ramp, it is important to be familiar with the different types of construction to determine what changes can be made to the existing building.
This course includes a basic discussion of construction types, building heights, and floor areas as required by the codes. It includes how they are typically used for new construction and how they can affect an interior project.
